5 years of idea collecting to make a masterpiece by a developer with 150,000 hours experience. 3 years into idea collecting 12/4/21.

I’m writing this game as the best I have to offer as a lifelong skill gamer, game designer, programmer, and lover of goodness and love. This underworld world of the dead will be very dark, but the moral is to not stop fighting for goodness and love ever! This game design helps me cope with a lost girlfriend because you never get over the good loves. I want people who never loved, got cheated on, got used, got abused, or despair, to play this fantasy game, and inside them get a righteous fury for the cause of good which wells up and forges a real indomitable spirit that the real devil can never break, and the real God can use for his purposes.

Just designing this game gives me solace. It may take 5-10 years or more, but this is my masterpiece attempt.

FEATURES:

Roguelite: Proceedural & Static levels.

Themes like original Castlevania 1.

Daily competitive speed runs on same seed. You get to watch ghost players on other shards as you play.

Health/Spirit(mana)/Stamina/Hunger/Thirst/Light/Sanity bars. 7 bars.

When sanity gets low, trippy things happen like hallucinated enemies that deal real damage.

Romeo and Juliet characters resolving, Biblical characters, Pop cultural characters.

Random ideas:

Dragula car, if get in, you fight every enemy & boss in entire game all at once.

Disease: Lemursy – If you contact Lemursy, you start spawning Lemurs.

Match 3 level. A level where the pieces are match 3 while you fight around em.

Brain slug enemy attaches to head and you have to jump against a ceiling/wall to bash it off.

Castlevania IV style whip throw around you and latch onto stuff.

Befriend a big fat dragon with small wings and he has to flap really fast to move, and obviously strains.

Fires do burn damage. Ice damage while burning reduces both ice damage and burn damage.

A labyrinth zone.

Feed animals to befriend em or placate them to get by.

NOW YOU MIGHT NOT UNDERSTAND MY NOTES, but at least fathom they’re 5 years deep, the culmination of a man called a Renaissance developer 120,000 hrs game design, coding , gaming, CANCELLED UNPAID despite making games that made millions of dollars for the publishers.

You made me think of those trippy D&D rune pages… What if there was an orbit on them, and as the orbit went around, some got different biases of power… One mage could accelerate or decelerate the orbit… But the orbits themselves could mean stuff too, like the years and players age as they fight for magic advantage of runes, or one could change seasons, or the tide which could also alter the battle right there… Rapidly changing seasons as you fight a boss battle could get sick… Ok, this is going in After Juliet…

Ok Jimmy. It has been a long time since I read The Hobbit, but I did take a minute to skim through this first chapter again. Tolkien, to me, is a master of incorporating literary devices with fantasy and reality. He makes up words I.e. flummoxed, confusticate, bebother, and estimable. But he does so in a way that the reader can understand the meaning from context – at least I could. His use of imagery abounds and so does his use of onomatopoeia, and through all of these delightful tactics, he presents a journey – a journey in which the characters will confront good and evil, and as he points out, may never return which to me is the journey of life. This right now is a most simplistic formula. As for a deeper more intense formula, I will have to read on. But actually I can see similarities with the adventures of Beowulf and Odysseus. I truly see this journey or struggle through life, but with no escape because no matter what we do, it all ends up in the same way leading to death- hence the existential philosophy as presented in Waiting for Godot.

Couple other things I might throw into this equation. I actually see Tolkien’s formula or pattern as more linear than circular. I certainly am not a math of science major, but many authors base their philosophical beliefs on mathematical theories. Thus Tolkien sees life as basically a line with occasional curves but ultimately leading to the same end while other writers see life as a more continuous circle. One other thing that leads me in this linear pattern is his symbolism. His reference to the # 13 is the ultimate symbol of death. So these are just a couple ideas to toss around. As far as his sentence structure and his combination of prose and poetry, I see that as his delightful play of words.

Heh, I think its funny, you can’t stop but go through the over arching meaning of his works. For that regard: Both Tolkien and C.S. Lewis were staunch Christians and best personal friends. Mere Christianity til this day still converts many intellectuals.

Both CS Lewis and Tolkien would sit around and read amateur poetry of the day and have fun with it aka grill or roast it. Cuz they were poetic masters who though their prose elicited imagination through fanciful words, they did it by an underlying almost equation.

People who see things in life often confuse art with science. User interface is one of those. I had a talk with ebay where I helped em a lot. Some people see the art of like facebook interfaces or twitter or ebay and think it is an art domain, but really it is a science with window dressing.

So you actually in your round about way of talking, brought up the interesting idea, of Tolkien having a formula for not just making hard to understand words understandable, but maybe his very poetry has a ‘formula’. The problem is that word formula often is construed with the idea of predictability. Maybe instead of saying formulaic for his system, maybe guidelines.

Try it man. It’d be easy to put up some theatre backdrops like Castlevania 2 or Google: Theatre Backdrop.

Then put people who hang out of windows and drop stuff on you, or roll balls down steps, etc. You already have it all there, just slap some reskin, hell just take the google images for a prototype and send em through a gimp filter in case they go retail, lol.

Normally some cool patterns you gotta learn, multi forums that come with some attitude sayings, grunts, etc. Tell a story with the Boss. Maybe even have the boss say all sorts of stuff at you as you fight him. The patterns/Weakpoints, having to have to have skill to defeat it even knowing patterns and stuff is good.

Now that you talk about this, I might have a boss battle like Zoo Keeper from the Arcade(Still holds up as a bad ass video game today), and the part where you jump ledges to the top could be part of the fight. Maybe one fight is fleeing a building flooding, or burning up and you have to constantly be doing some Wizards and Warriors level jumping as you escape. Another might be just that the power is at the top, but after it is got, the sconce you get it from bursts into light so you both have to drop down and bear the consequences of who got it first. After Juliet is inspired by Castlevania 1 with equipment and leveling.

You fight through some static and some procedural zones.

Bosses are fallen Biblical characters, famous historical characrs or people from Romeo and Juliet.

You are presented with choices: Gaining power by picking a corruped choice is a repeated theme. Choosing a love who is not Juliet, maybe. Eventually players will understand that they need to stay righteous and pure which might make battling more difficult, but it is the only way to win and get the good ending of reuniting with Juliet and going to Heaven from God.

It is our duty as game designers to make the battling feel crisp, not have Romeo feel super over powered or underpowered in his progression so combat takes tactics. This is an extension of the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet where Romeo can get redemption. It harnesses the core feelings one should have in a battle between good and evil, almost makes you tear up as you play if we do dialogue right in his righteous choices.

So we need crisp reflex battling as our core design though players will level up differently.

Speed Running will determine if you get certain powerup(s).

Good Morning, Jimmy!!! Actually when you told me about thinking of various encounters, several popped into my mind. You mentioned Poe, and The Tell Tale Heart has a good encounter when the narrator is talking to the guy that committed the murder and then gave himself away by hearing his own heartbeat and thought it was the beating of his victim’s heart. Also in The Fall of the House of Usher when Madeline is buried alive – I think you could make some kind of weird.correlation with Juliet using your creativity.
Then in The Odyssey, Odysseus encounter with the Herpies would be a good one. Also in the Bible, you could use the escape from King Herod, and I really would love to see you incorporate something from the story of The Prodigal Son. Those are just a few ideas I thought of yesterday. I actually keep a notebook by my bed because some of my best thoughts come to me right before I go to sleep and if I don’t write them down, I will forget them the next morning.

Maybe after my project ends, we can have coffee at Panera’s and you can give me more details of your endeavors. You have yourself a good day!

The secret to making great plots today is not sitting down and trying. In fact this will make terrible hokey 80s comedy plots. Just write down during the day your wonderful thoughts, jokes people say, jokes you think, revelations of double entendres we talked about in class.

If you TRY and be creative, it doesn’t work well… Just write down stuff that is cool!

Eventually you’ll have hundreds of cool events, then you just chain them together and you have the next hit movie!

Please choose to remember your creativity. Have a college ruled notebook or pro notebook to write it down if you while you score tests. :)

Phase 4) Design the World of the Dead.

There will be some proceedural. There will be some static levels.

The idea is that the World of the Dead is trying to corrupt you and change your desires, but you need to stay true to your love Juliet, wherever she is.

Intro stage would be static, an angel will say,”No matter how bad it gets down there, you can be restored to this point.”

So by default it will be perma death, but they can pay like 5 cents for continues

Some of the bosses are Montagues who died in Romeo and Juliet. :)

I have very creative, maybe twisted at first glance stuff, but really it is tame and the player has to make the right choices to not get corrupted by the World of the Dead. I was gonna spend 5-8 years compiling these stage feelings, but I can rush design and do a pretty good job once we get to this point.


Cool Feature: Since it is proceedurally generated, every 2 hours, a random seed gets sent out via server to all players. You can compete with all other players to speed run, and see ghost players on your screen where they are. The player who gets the furthest is winner of that Speed Run Royale. 4 pm PST every day, the daily Speed Run Royale is done, and records are kept for it.

Normally some cool patterns you gotta learn, multi forums that come with some attitude sayings, grunts, etc. Tell a story with the Boss. Maybe even have the boss say all sorts of stuff at you as you fight him. The patterns/Weakpoints, having to have to have skill to defeat it even knowing patterns and stuff is good.

Now that you talk about this, I might have a boss battle like Zoo Keeper from the Arcade(Still holds up as a bad ass video game today), and the part where you jump ledges to the top could be part of the fight. Maybe one fight is fleeing a building flooding, or burning up and you have to constantly be doing some Wizards and Warriors level jumping as you escape. Another might be just that the power is at the top, but after it is got, the sconce you get it from bursts into light so you both have to drop down and bear the consequences of who got it first. Great stuff, I’ll add it to my idea compilation on /r/afterjuliet

Magnetism comes to mind (though may be because I just finished some gmtk videos 😁) do with that what you will!

Time manipulation is a great one. Pause, slow, reverse. Actually pretty easy to setup too, but animations can be harder to do depending on how they are set up.

Elemental shenanigans. One element at a time! Pick up a thunder stone and now you can zap doors. Pick up a water stone and you can swim. Etc.

Dimensional travel. Hit a button and you are in the shadow realm, a copy of this world but dark and spooky. Or any other realm really. Multiple realms?

Portals. Nuff said, but you would be competing with portal so an uphill climb if I’ve ever heard one.

Shape change. Turn into squirrels, dogs, bears, dragons, weasels, fish. Each one does something different. Basically Mario Odessy, but with your own spin on it. Pun intended.

Gravity. Similar to magnetism, change the direction of gravity.

Level manipulation. Pause the game but able to move certain things around in the level.

Visors — you can change what you can see/interact with, like in Metroid Prime. It could clue you into invisible hazards or invisible passages or something. You could even have visors that block some colors of light and can be combined, or that let you see in more or less detail, etc., if you can find a way to make that actually meaningfully change the world.

Interaction with some sort of hidden world or other side or something — you can access the portals to go into the Light World (assuming the dungeon is in the Dark World), or maybe you go while keeping your form like in Link to the Past.

Flight — you can just straight-up fly anywhere. A useful end-game ability; it could even consume some sort or mana so you can only do it for a limited time. A recent game does this, combined with turning the player into a cloud that can pass through certain objects, but it would be a spoiler to reveal which one so I won’t.

Jumping — you can actually leave the ground and be higher than several times your own height! Most people can only jump a foot or so off the ground, but with this upgrade, you can even touch the ceiling sometimes! Mario does this. You may think I’m being facetious, but I think Knytt Underground doesn’t give the player the ability to jump, only to climb on any surface. I could be misremembering. But jumping could be a great early-game upgrade, and if you implement it well, you could even have a later section where you lose that ability temporarily.

Climbing — you can just climb up walls and maybe even ceilings.

Ledge grab — you can grab ledges and pull yourself up. A good early-game upgrade.

Block spawning — spawn a block you can climb, push onto switches, etc., like in Alwa’s Awakening, Link to the Past, etc. Maybe you can even explode the block to get extra height in a jump or push it hard into something or throw it over a gap or whatever.

Grappling hook — self-explanatory.

Spawning things other than blocks — self explanatory.

Shapeshifting — change your form into a dragon or a fly or whatever, like in Aquaria.

Tools — maybe you can find a wrench that lets you turn bolts, a hammer to drive in nails, etc., and these can be used to fix some structure you can use to proceed. Maybe you have to actually do this mechanically, not automatically, which means you can have puzzles that involve these tools. This kind of falls under the lock/key principle, where you have a contrived obstacle that requires a particular item to pass and the item is only useful for that obstacle, but maybe you can create enough of a variety here to escape that problem. Golden Sun has an interesting way of doing this, where the magic spells you can learn also interact with the world, and you use this to solve puzzles.

Lyle in Cube Sector is one of my favorite Metroidvanias and this is the game’s core mechanic. It does so much with a simple concept, and if you haven’t played it, you should. It’s a classic.

Man, so many great ideas already.

I had one idea for a game where you played a character that could level up strength, dexterity or magic individually. If you leveled up strength you could smash things, move rocks, alter the environment to your advantage pretty much. This ended up being the block-mover playstyle. The dex style could jump higher and longer which eventually turned into the full range of parkour gymnastics.The magic user actually used the power of shadows, so it started with manipulating shadows sort of like the strength style but with a twist, and ended up being able to build things out of shadows and even teleport from shadow to shadow.

Pretty much it’s a good idea to build a game around an interesting exploration mechanic rather than try and jam those mechanics into a copypaste metroidvania game. I like to start off with how the player feels when they play the game and what I want their core experience to be. Celeste is a GREAT medroidvania, and that went with super tight jumping puzzles. Ori and the Blind Forest is another great game, and is far more laid back. Spelunkey has a bit of combat, but mostly it’s about falling carefully and using found tools to overcome environmental hazards.

How do you want your game to feel besides “it’s just another metroidvania”? Like what do you want your game to bring to the table to stand apart from all the other games.

Apply these puzzle like exploration game mechanics to a Metroidvania 2D setting could be fun. I feel like combat is what breaks up the puzzle aspects of the metroidvania games. Combining challenges into future puzzles becomes more difficult.

At the end of a game each puzzle exploring game should allow the player to acquire an ability or tool to help them find pieces that they didn’t find earlier. It doesn’t have to solve a puzzle but it’s be nice to see something say “you forgot this one in this general direction” when someone is missing those last few game secrets or collectibles, etc.

This reminds me of this weird exploit on Morph Ball mechanics in Metroid Fusion.

Here’s one instance of it. Right after it is this one.

I’m not saying that you should copy it 1:1, but it’s a pretty quirky way of getting around. We could get some ideas out of it.

What if you had a weapon that has a slight recoil, so when you use it downwards, you get pushed up a tiny bit? What if you could make an animation cancel mechanic so that you could do two of these mini-jumps twice in quick succession? You could hide some areas really well with this.

#1 IN THE WORLD at Starcraft/Broodwar/Warcraft3/Diablo2 Hardcore/Command and Conquer3/Starcraft2 2v2. GOAT.
Before Pinky and The Brain, The Parapalegic Mice Team existed, and I told everyone in my school for weeks in hopes someone knew someone at WB/Disney/HB to make a tv show of two mice taking over the world. Next Year Pinky and The Brain was out.

1) 10-1000x things rendered with new DOTS/ECS UNITY tech that unlocks more than just one core that most video games use: Parallel Processing done right.

2) Networking that pushes the envelope where no networking has gone before. People laugh at this like it is impossible to innovate, but I marketed it to Midway in 2003, and they laughed too. Meanwhile it was working in house as a Tekken style(3d fighter) MMO with part of what today is known as rollback code. Midway's manager was mocking what is today's standard thinking rollback and such was impossible. Infinite action players same zone, limit only by video card and other hardware, networking ain't a limiting thing anymore.

3) Lore/Game Mechanics based on a custom TTRPG (Intergalactic Bounty Hunter) that most everyone liked more than any RPG. RPG rules are based on Wasteland from the Commodore 64 set in space. The space flight is the spiritual successor of 90s DOS Xwing vs Tiefighter hits that everyone was disappointed ended. I had to make my own RPG, Dungeons and Dragons armor not reducing damage did not sit well.

4) First MMO designed for late game. Everyone enjoys mmos until power capped and then get bored.
There is no power cap to begin with(just a log log logarithmic progression), but there are many many many other end game design elements to make it so want to keep playing end game! The grind is there, but better and more fun things are around too! You can build up a super big fleet and it get destroyed to pieces and you start over again. You have a power floor level that you can't go below so you're always building permanent power, but temporary spikes of power surges and galactic dominance for fleeting moments give a rush. The larger the fleet, the larger the fleeting moment.

5) Easter Eggs: Will contain literal Easter Eggs. You find an Easter Egg in a quest. Then you hide somewhere in space. Every day it isn't found by another player, you get a daily reward that increases. When they find it, they get an instant reward! Then the egg comes back to you. Enjoy. Go find some place obscure in the game, space is big.

6) Space Dungeons: Competitive zones with different rules, find em, dominate em, and can you find the clues around space to find the one which will be dropping special event rewards?

7) Resource Trading like Elite, but also factory building like Factorio and Satisfactory. Your economy and drones can build stuff up, but make sure no pirate, NPC or player tries to sabotage your supply chain. There will be illegal substances like fictitious drugs and contraband weapons which you can profit from greatly, but you risk your cargo being scanned by a random and getting a bounty on your head.

8) PVP bounty system. Everyone can PVP at all times. Stakes are low if your ship explodes. If you get attacked without declaring aggressive mode or an opponent to duel, the aggressor gets a bounty on their head in accordance with the damage dealt to you. If this bounty gets high enough, and they get caught, they will be put in jail. When they log on for the next few hours or days, their character can play only in jail, and visitors come see him and such. Enjoy roleplaying being a prison inmate, or just use a different crew member on your account. Developing many crew members is a thing for when you fly capital ships.

9) Grand Space Opera-> 4x emperors around you trying to conquer the galaxy like Master of Orion on a 500 billionish system scale! They ain't even players at first, just NPCs waging war. Who's side will you choose? Will it be based on morality or space bucks? Ok soldier of fortune, what it will be? Do it for the money, until you realize money doesn't mean anything living under a totalitarian empire.

10) Omnipotent roleplay: Earn your right into a a movie anime by great roleplay! Live game masters in about 6-12 months after the content updates roll through. We bias people with Founder's RP tokens some and good manner role players who stay in character(we have chat logs and even game logs). This promotes good role play even when not live GMing. Punky-Pulpy action, Levels, stats, skills, talents, items, fleet amassing, and great apocalyptic space plots, trippy Lewis Carrol level Mad Hatter humor along the way. It's really weird to see how this synergizes from a game design standpoint. Players naturally want to level up and power up... That's the twink min maxer in all of us. So when humor, plots, intrigue, or NPCs getting your blood boiling to action vs them happens, you get stoked, rewarded, happy and tossed off your axis. Then when resolved, you look back and get serious about powering up. The core of a RPG gamer is always powering up, it is something we can't get rid of, but the core of a game designer is to get you out of a spreadsheet mindset temporarily... And then you appreciate both more. So tacky humor, along serious pulp action and serious leveling up game mechanics... It is like a symphony of fun.
