We’re trying to achieve a tech when you hit warp drive, the stars you see in the skybox whip past you like Star Trek TNG and in the next sector appear in a different location in the skybox. It sounds straight forward, and I know how to do it for the most part… But it’s gonna be awesome to behold since I don’t think anyone’s done it before.
Society for the Destruction of Daylight Savings Time
The society for the destruction of daylight savings time does have an actual valid cause, and goes about it in the right way kinda, but they have bad PR. SDDST members refuse to acknowledge the actual time of day put forth by a random nation on Earth many years ago. They try and say,”Why don’t you listen to our time? Our time makes more sense than yours. The time change is something that shouldn’t have happened in the USA” they say. “It makes even less sense to arbitrarily change the time in galactic wide fashion since only one system actually gets sun shine from Sol, and some systems have no sun at all! Your changing everything because of this arbitrary clock change takes time out of the day!” Seeing this, many people, aliens, mutants and denizens think these guys are crazy for dedicating themselves to wasting their entire life to save a little time by removing daylight saving’s time. “Why can’t they be like everyone else and just go with the flow and not raising a stink for something so small?” “Why not stand up for something that matters, like the rule change in Bladeskate which allows players to put helmets back on their heads when they’re knocked off? Bladeskate games will take longer to knock everyone out now.”
The Society for the Destruction of Daylight Savings Time has also been under fire lately from the non violent alliance between the Society for the Destruction of Societies and the Society to make a better Society.
Rally Z-Team Infinite Cross Play
I had a guy on the forums who heard of my server tech I wrote from scratch over like 5,000 hrs + now and it’s been with forever uptime hosting no major crashes over like 4 years. He wants to rent the tech out. I told him for a very few bucks a month he could host a card game, a turn based game, or anything with low latency. I always wanted to do this, rent out servers, but now I can.
I chose to make a limited vocabulary Python that I call Constricted Python. You declare your storage, character space, classes etc in this language. Then you make hooks to pass information/process. Encryption is optional, but you must write your own. There’s even a wild loop to process things over time. It has Steam Logins, but also accounts for mobile devices and get this… the coveted cross play between Steam and any mobile device. You can write software for IOS and Android that requires a Steam login then later consoles, Linux, Apple.
I want to bang this out fast. My bro is making me Skyboxes for Starfighter General which will Star Trek the Next Generation warp from one zone to another, with the actual stars of color, design and stuff MOVE with you and realign so the sky box changes. It is pretty ambitious every step of the way here. Pray for me.
Starfighter General Foundation Patch Out
There ain’t much new in this foundation patch, but it allows us to add new stuff once every three days, or once every day if we feel spelunky.
Every tech for the MMO is doable, but we need to database in everything slowly.
In order to do this properly, we will radically change the universe you play in until release, but preserve your character progression. That’s right, this alpha/beta whatever will NOT reset your character when final comes out and the updates after. Again: Your character will never be reset, but maybe roll back in case of server error. This character you have now, your base, stays with you as long as you play.
That said… You’ll probably just want to check in each patch see what is changed and go “Hey neet”, lets see what happens next… Eventually though, it will start getting good, and you’ll play more. And if you think it’s about to get good,
Again, this long awaited patch is boring! Hooray! Jim, you spent a year on getting a boring game out! What’s with you! Well, its about long term progress. This is a solid architecture by which we make a space opera universe bigger than anything out there, easy to pick up, and always some new stuff to do and explore.
Enjoy the boring foundation patch!
,Jim
How did we get here?
1) A competitive board game where you start with a Cleric/Theif/Mage/Warrior. They start between a location(Tower/temple/town/dungeon) and the main quest line. The main quest line is similar to a regular board game where you travel squares with a dice roll and hit difficulties along the way. If you don’t have your characters go and level up at a location, they might not be powerful enough to do the main quest line and be KOed and have to be level 1 at start again. So the whole game revolves around if you want to race to do your main quest line before your opponents, or if you want to sit back and level up for later. The Tower is where the mage can throw spells out at other questors. The Town is where the thief can rob and gain you gold. The temple allows for your cleric to heal your guys remotely and level up some. The dungeon obviously is where you can acquire lewt and experience. Each character can be moved by themselves or they can form a group.
2) Intergalactic Bounty Hunter – I wrote an RPG I played with my friends in Jr High and Highschool PNP. I’m thinking of publishing the rules. I’m also thinking of making a procedurally generated universe where planets are actually the full size of planets using random seeds. I was thinking of letting players make their own towns and space hubs.
3) My arc for one of my games was to eventually allow you to rule a castle and kingdom sim. I’ve found via market research that people who want to do a castle sim are less likely to want to leave their castle on adventures. So if I was to do a castle sim, it’d probably be smart to have the entire game about it instead of letting you go on adventures. But I still think having adventures as an option to some is good. I just think maybe I should do castle sim earlier than later.
4) A hockey game. It’d be like any other side view hockey game. The trouble is that it’d require wifi and could not be played on the go so there’s less market. It’d have controls for touchscreen and controller play. That all sounds boring, but where it’d be cool is in the matchmaking. After each game, you can choose who on your team you’d want to play with again or who not to play with again. This way you’d eventually be playing with people you like and jerks can be on the other team.
5) A collectable card game of a hybrid between magic the gathering and Hearthstone with no art. I have a unique system, and you’ll be allowed to bring three decks to customize when you play. 1 is resource deck and the other two is up to you. Each turn you draw one from resource and one from the other two.
6) World War 2 and 1/2. This is a game I designed when I was like 7 years old some 30 odd years ago. Basically its simply a big 2d map with resource nodes you capture with army vehicles. It was fun way back in the day, and plays a little like Risk, but I’m not sure if it would be good today.
7) Redo the old Commodore 64 lemonade stand
8)A game like Katamari Damacy which is competitive where the bigger roller can grab opponents up and KO them. An alternate version would be like a Pac man competitive game, where you grow as you eat dots, and then slowly shrink when you’re not eating dots… The bigger Pacman wins. I think it’d work because if you chase someone when you’re big and they run away through some new dots, they could get bigger while you shrink. It could be a bunch of cat and mouse
9) A game where you play as a turret operator like starwars did in the Millenium Falcon. You’d be looking out the side of the screen at stuff that flies by and you’d need to aim at it and time it for the range it is at.
10) An actual Xwing vs TieFighter style remake with bad 3d models to start out with. It’d be a moba where you’d need to dog fight your way through capital ships shielding their main space fortress. As you defeat automated craft and your opponents, you’d gain scrap and tech to upgrade your ship. It could have a cross over tie in with cell phone users who could shoot turrets out the side of your ships.
11) A procedurally generated game like Zelda. I have the art assets ready. I’d have to make the random level making code, and maybe a few new bosses.
12) Ecology- This is a puzzle game where you have 100×100 levels like Zelda and you need to kill off all the monsters on the whole board. Many monsters spawn more monsters, so the solution is sometimes to introduce a monster that can eat the other monsters and deal with them later. Or maybe wall off and corral the monsters. I’m not sure how a game about killing off all of a species of a monster would fly though.
13) A plain education app. The more free education apps out there, the smarter the world will be. You never know if you’ll educate your future doctor.
14) Money Fighter- This is more of a joke on F2P games than anything else. You attack your opponent using virtual goods. One of the ultimate attacks is Unicef Penny drop, where you drop a pallette of unicef pennies on your opponent and it actually gets donate to the poor.
15) A game like tekken open world that is also a MOBA. I have the code for this, but I need to learn Blender to do 10 3d models for the fighters.
16) A pokemon style platformer. You pick up pokemon and can melee by attacking with them, or throwing them at the monsters. Or dropping it and letting it attack. It’d be comical, and parodying the fact that pokemon tries to be cute, but you’re actually pitfighting animals. The game would have a unique scrolling element where the middle 1/3 of the screen is normal, but as you go off to the sides, the scalex is less. This means you’ll be able to see way further than most other platformers. I wanted to do this since Sonic 1 where I wanted to run without memorizing the level.
17) Fatty Bird. A game like flappy bird, but you eat insects and get fatter and harder to fly. This would have to rely on comical sketches. A bird dropping attack would let you lose weight. You could dive bomb to kill enemies at the bottom or to cannon ball into water for bonus points and making a tsunami if you’re really big.
18) A dual axis twin shooter that requires a gamepad. The tech would be as you shot monsters, they lose bits and pieces of pixels. If you got to their center, they explode in a pixel explosion.
19) Area 52:A card game like war, but skill elements added.
20) Dog Fort- Not sure exactly how I’d want to go about doing it, but making a game off the Dog Fort meme. It’d require lots of pictures of animals and good 3d modeling.
21) Team pong. A soccer field with pong paddles is made. You play your position with other players and AI. There would be extra balls in play so you don’t get bored at your position. Just thinking of this game bores me however so I probably won’t do it.
22) Starfighter General: A master of Orion 2 remix for mobile.
23) Final Fantasy meets Roguelike- I have the art for this. You’d explore a random dungeon and combat is like FinalFantasy. You can find NPCs to come along and have a party of size 50+ to do combat with if you find a big enough army.
Anyone have any preference on what game I should make next?
Edit: Thanks guys for patiently reading and telling me what you’d like. It does help me decide.
From a post 6 years ago: https://old.reddit.com/r/AndroidGaming/comments/3dqts9/of_these_games_i_was_thinking_of_making_next/
Guess we should make an android build sometime.
Foundation patch coming
Space Magic
It’s a space game with space wizard magic… And mutant powers you can discover that breaks the rules and anything is possible, but not expect because you’re expecting only space magic where anything was possible. You think that’s the end of nonsensical rule breaking, but here’s more! We have technology that’s so advanced, it looks like magic! Hah, everything flipped on its head, how long have you gone with normal space magic and mutant power magic that now you have high technology magic, you never saw it coming… Just when you’re reeling to discover advanced tech magic is in the game, you stumble over relic with ancient tech magic which is so radically different than high tech magic, nothing will be the same. Your mind must be going in a zillion directions, then out comes an abyssal dimensional horror from a reality you never heard of, because your character’s sanity got low. Boom: Abyssal horror from infinite dimensional magic, now what? And before you know what to do with all those infinite power sources, you find out God is real. How can you explore the possibilities of anything being possible by space magic, mutant power magic, advanced tech magic, ancient relic magic, abyssal horror magic, and miracles from God. That’s six ways of infinitely anything possible. 6xinfinity = more than infinity.
Welcome to StarFighter General I feel personally attacked by your comment. (replying to someone talking about incredible powers in worldbuilding)
PS: Day 10 of getting a standalone, 55+ hrs later with 30 hrs of fret, we closing in.
Designed For End Game Content : EASTER EGGS
Everything about Starfighter General is designed for the long haul of decades of play. I don’t want you bored. Level caps? Boring. We don’t have em, instead logarithmic leveling curves that have diminishing returns of power at higher levels. A dedication to role play encouraged by the best role players get placed to live game masters = designed for end game content. I have many more things designed for end game. So let us discuss Starfighter General Easter Eggs.
In Starfighter General, an Easter Egg is a hidden item you find in game called an Easter Egg. There are various colors. shapes, sizes and designs. Each one gives you a reward when you find it and it goes in your inventory. At any place in the game, you can remove it from your inventory to “HIDE THE EASTER EGG”. At this point, every day that passes, you will get an ever increasing daily reward according to the type of Easter Egg that was dropped. The longer the egg stays hidden, the bigger your daily reward. Once someone finds the Easter Egg, they get rewarded immediately in proportion to how long it stayed hidden. What they get rewarded depends on the type.
I shared this idea with RIOT MMORPG game designers on Linkedin, as we shared that modern MMOS must be designed for end game. No one wants to grind their way to a brick wall of nothing to do. I always let people use my ideas for free and no compensation. I want games better for all, money is just a by product of making a good game.
Update on the Foundation Patch I finished last week: Unity has a problem where it can’t compile standalones very well. So I’m 8 days and over 40 hours into this… I’m making some progress, but not done.
Custom Mounted Weapons / Thrusters
Hello,
A fairly early tech we want to have is to allow you to mount your acquired weapons and thrusters at weird angles on your ship if you wish. So you can shoot off the side with a plasma bolt launcher. Or say put a bunch of thrusters you seldom use to the one side of your ship for evasive maneuvers. I supposed painted emblems and such could be a thing too.
Right now, it’s been about 5 days that I can’t compile a Unity Standalone. Unity is a great game development IDE, but I haven’t seen any IDE in over 40 years be unable to compile a release version when it can compile a debug version. This is my main reason to post. I’m spending many hours on something I shouldn’t have to do.
UPDATE: OKAY! I figured out how to finally find how to get to a live build! The key is that if there is a crash, I will start binary searching my way to what caused the crash. This is to say, remove half the program, see if crash still there. Keep it up til crash isn’t there. Then add half of what is removed back. It will take probably a day or two, but we’ll do it. You can watch me figure this out as I video journaled it:
I try and vaguely be entertaining. I can’t turn it off. And you can learn some things about human nature, psychology and software engineering. It’s not a bad watch, but more of something to put on in the background like a chill podcast.
Foundation Patch going in
Server down 6/10/22 12:06 PM EST, for Foundation patch going in. We might be down for as long as an hour, this is a big time patch on my side, but you won’t see much… Just a new combat mode.
You’ll be able to fight some destroyers, and drones, collect scrap, come back to the base outlined in a box fire and it collects the Ph@t L3vvT you found to your base perma. This is how the game is played in general from here on out. You can lose everything you send through the Dimensional Portal, but you keep everything you send back through it. There are limits on transfers that you can upgrade over time. Your Home Dimension is permanent progression, while the Dimensional Areas are basically gambling with your resources and fleets. It’s a risk/reward, but you’re always progressing.
Each patch coming every other day or week so will try and make the zones new, spicy. Some zones may never be playable again, but the stuff you gain from them is permanent. We have permanent progression as the world changes around you. It’s exciting. You never know what is new or in store. What anomalies will you see? Poke around and snoop out each emerging patch. We’ll get this game to a really engaging non stop play, but until then, it will be super fun, just to check changes for a few minutes and manage your base!
I got tripped up on a Unity Problem making a standalone:
or you’d have it now. I fix this tech we live.
Foundation Techs finished
Hello,
Today, I hit a milestone of coding, one that I’ve been trying to make a MMO before they were known as MMO or even existed: 1992. I’ve been coding MMOs for more hours than anyone alive likely even though I have not released one I had working publicly. So I’m releasing the foundation code, which is the base of which a strongly architected MMO will be built upon.
Most game developers are fly by night slap dash coders who look for effect and cash in. As they try and update, they realize their code was not ready for it and they have trouble patching. They build akin to a house of cards on top of a stack of jello. I’ve been coding since I was 3, and I have been through that, and now I’m a grand masterful renaissance style software engineer and designer. Many who know me know me as the greatest of skill in playing video games #1 in a lot of video games I played world even prestigious ones. But not a lot of people know how much this translates into the insight of the core of making video games and what they are about… So I have a foundation… The foundation is humble, and so is my creator, but he’s bestowed upon me some really outrageous creativity and software engineering skills. I’m bragging on my creator in hopes he helps me create this new universe.
That said… Your character progression will be saved. The dimensional alignment (change until the Prime Dimension is focused and stable) will have you go through strange realms. As you collect items and level up your character(s), your progression stays into live version. There is no reverting in this beta unless serious database corruptions happen.
This makes things exciting! It’s like the old RPG that you could carry your character into the next… So you spend weeks grinding just so you’re stronger for the next patch/update/world. We have this going here.
I’m going to give it to you straight: LOTS of features are stripped out. Your fun might be just you logging in, checking out the new world, collecting some gear and waiting for the next patch. And this should be fun since the space zones will be wild to look at, at least. I want to be pushing patches every day or about that… This is a target I know I’ll stumble from time to time as life hits me, but this is the plan.
Expect the first world tomorrow. I could launch today, but I want to make some sort of zone that is pretty neet at least. All the working techs for the game are in as of this hour… I put about 5000-7000 hours into this game so far depending on metrics… And it is all investment for the long haul, a strong foundation, and you can build on it for a long time. I want this to be an MMO you play casually or hardcore for a lifetime, and for it to grow into the original vision and beyond.
Take care, and I hope to have a patch out tomorrow, assuming life doesn’t hit. I could bust tail and get one out tonight, but I want to take it easy for a bit. Thanks for following along this long, shooting for the moon is fun, for even if you miss and get sent out to the stars, you’re going really fast and its a rush!
,Jim
Gaming Tech: Auto performance Balancing
So, there are all sorts of cool particle effects, whales and bistles in Starfighter General. Bells and whistles…
So the FPS is monitored and if it drops below like 50 FPS, unnecessary stuff like excessive particle effects, animations slowed down, and all sorts of lower caliber stuff doesn’t get processed as often.
I wanna hit the gym, see who’s there, come home and launch the most important, but plain patch: Foundation.
Humble Foundational Update soon
Hello,
I’m launching a humble foundational update soon.
This patch is HUUUGE for me, but humble for you.
It will just be a curiosity, log in, do some stuff, but not much depth.
Behind the scenes tho, we can send patches out daily or every so many days, updating it a little at a time.
This is HUGE for me, but just a teeny curiosity for you.
Your character progression is permanent outside of roll backs.
So while the game and universe changes radically each patch, you bring your same character in.
This is an exciting never before done concept. Reminds me of Old Quest For Glory 1-3 and retaining your character.
It promotes wanting to upgrade your character for what comes next. So it makes some of the grind parts more fun.
Boy Scout Motto: Be Prepared
